Biography

Dr. Bei obtained his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China. Right after that the joined Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) as a postdoc and Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) as visiting research fellow. He returned to SYSUCC after years of working as research scientist at GIS. His major research interest is to dissect genetic predispositions, acquired alterations, environmental factors (intrinsic and extrinsic) contributing to cancer heterogeneity, as well as the underlying mechanisms. He has published more than 130 scientific papers including those in prestigious journals such as Cell, Nat Genet, Lancet Oncol, etc. He has track-records in organizing large international collaborations.

Research Interest

Cancer is a complex systemic disease driven by genetic predispositions and acquired alterations arising from factors such as pathogen infections, environmental exposures, and stress. These elements collectively create a sophisticated niche that fosters tumor initiation, progression, therapeutic resistance, and relapse. Our research focuses on dissecting the interplay between germline variations, acquired changes in host and/or pathogens, and the tumor microenvironment across multiple dimensions, aiming to elucidate the intricate mechanisms underlying cancer development and evolution.

His team primarily study Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-related malignancies, such as Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC), Natural Killer/T cell lymphoma (NKTCL), and gastric cancer. These cancers are uniquely significant due to their strong associations with EBV and their high prevalence in Southern China. Leveraging these models, our team has established robust multi-omics data generation and analysis platforms. These platforms integrate genome-wide genetic data, transcriptomics, and epigenomics, analyzed at both bulk tissue/cell and single-cell levels. Coupled with clinical and follow-up data, we conduct association and mapping studies to identify key genes, pathways, and cellular networks that influence cancer risk, diagnostics, therapeutic response, prognosis, and patient survival.

A vital component of our strategy is fostering international collaborations, which enable us to integrate diverse expertise and resources from global partners. Through these collaborative efforts, we aim to advance our understanding of cancer biology and evolution, ultimately contributing to the development of more effective prevention and treatment strategies for this challenging disease.
