As Dean Anlong Xu describes, IAS is committed to "Pushing Boundaries and Solidifying Impact" approach. "Pushing Boundaries" emphasizes breakthroughs in frontier sciences, basic research, and interdisciplinary studies, while "Solidifying Impact" focuses on the transfering of these scientific achievements into practical applications. According to President Gao Song of Sun Yat-sen University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, IAS prioritizes three key fields: Biomedical Sciences, Applied Mathematics, and Humanities and Social Sciences. The institute aims to recruit top global talent, foster collaboration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and develop world-class laboratories. It also seeks to provide an environment conducive to high-level innovation, offering robust support for the development and commercialization of frontier technologies.

To utilize the strengths of both Guangdong and Hong Kong to attract high-level talent and recruit graduate students from around the world, Sun Yat-sen University established the Institute of Advanced Studies, Hong Kong in 2024. The institute will serve the national strategy for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the "Belt and Road" initiative. Several distinguished scholars have expressed their desire to join or participate for an extended period.
